I was born and raised in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I grew up with a faithful Christian mother and a short-tempered, alcoholic father. My escape was reading and music. I think I was the only kid with my nose in a book during the Air Force Academy football games. As a rebellious teen, I was very self-destructive and always getting into trouble. Needing a change, I followed my father’s footsteps and joined the Air Force.

During my four-year enlistment, I was stationed at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, Nevada, where I met my wonderful husband. After our tour ended, we moved to Southern Indiana, on the outskirts of Louisville, Kentucky. I have two teenage sons whom I try to embarrass but have yet to succeed. Now, as the president of Kentuckiana Authors, I coordinate book fairs, signings, and parties for the group. This keeps me busy along with my writing.

When a wealthy real estate developer convinces Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Schmidt to search for his missing son, Schmitty senses trouble. I just learned that The Girl in Black Pajamas won the NBAE Pinnacle Award for Suspense. The Girl in White Pajamas previously won the Pinnacle Award for Mystery. For almost twenty-five years, I did investigative work for small law firms conducting business in rough housing projects and crack house neighborhoods. I met with clients in every jail in the area even the now defunct Charles Street Jail and Deer Island House of Corrections. On good days, I got to take the .25 caliber handgun out of my pocket and the 9mm out of my purse and go to court. Then the real show began! Several years ago, while sitting in a courtroom with a client, I watched as a police officer was lambasted by an attorney. The attorney was defending a young woman who crashed her car into two other vehicles before she passed out drunk behind the wheel. The occupants of the other cars were seriously hurt and the cop, a former EMT, tried to assist the injured while waiting for ambulances to arrive. The attorney questioned the cop’s every move, shredded his testimony and made him seem inept. Embarrassed, the cop returned to his seat beside me and muttered, “Everybody lies. The judges lie, the lawyers lie, the witnesses lie..” I wanted to tell him not to worry that in about five years he’d be just as good a liar as they were. The seeds for The Girl in White Pajamas (the first book in the series) were planted in that courtroom.

Carmen Gross, pen name Carmen Stevens, was born in Fargo, ND, March 1992. She currently resides in Detroit Lakes, MN, where she works and attends college full time. Carmen published her novel “Anne” in July 2013-an exciting, richly-written historical work about a young English girl who makes many bad choices throughout her life and then struggles to find redemption.

When I take part in author interviews, a question that keeps coming up in those interviews is what inspired me to write “Anne”. I’ve always loved writing, but just before I started to write this story, I was taking a break from it. I think I might’ve had writer’s block. But two of my sisters were avid writers as well, and they inspired me to get back to writing. I thought that I wanted to write a big project like a novel, so I started brainstorming ideas for such a novel. I’ve always loved historical fiction, and the country of England as well. I decided to write something that took place in old England, and then I created a female protagonist whose personality, I think, stems from my dark side. Then I thought about the themes I wanted to portray throughout my story. Just before writing this story, my eyes had begun to open to the kind of world we were really living in. I’m sure there’s more good in the world than bad, but I had begun to notice the bad, too. So then I thought of things like love and its power, hope, faith, and happiness. I decided to incorporate all of these things, and more, into my book. In my novel, you will find that there is no such thing as fate, that we are the authors of our own destinies. You will also read about how powerful an element love really is, never giving up in life, always moving forward into the future, having hope and faith, and making the world the best that it can be by loving and respecting one another. These are the things I hope to depict through the story of my historical fiction novel, and I hope that I’ve covered these subjects in detail throughout my story. Now, to everyone who took the time to read this biography in its entirety, I want to say thank you, and I want to dedicate my novel to all of you.

Lowhim served in the US Army as a Green Beret and graduated from Columbia University. He’s been published in LA review of LA, Nine Line Anthology, and Afterwords. Born in the bubbling cauldron of Tanzania, he picked up his first pen at the age of two and chewed. He’s progressed much since then. He wrote his first story at 5, a knockoff of all the prince-saves-princess stories he’d read at the time. Life did not rest. It took him to India, then frigid Michigan. The shock, according to parent-sources, was a character building exercise. Lowhim, however, only remembered clenched fingers trying to write. Soon he was hitchhiking the mountainous American West, where the outlaw locals kept his journal full of color. It wasn’t long before he joined the US Army where the detritus of Babylon only furthered his literary ambitions. Iraq wasn’t done with him. He would return, an Engineer in 5th SFG. When he returned from that trip, he finished his first novel. Released upon the world, he attended Columbia University. He spent his free time writing and working with other authors. He graduated and has since been penning some of the most ambitious novels this side of that Pluto rock. Lowhim currently lives with his girlfriend in the Bronx.
