Queen Máxima of the Netherlands by Liesbeth Heenk

The Indie Book of the Day for 21st of February, 2014!

Genre: Memoir, Royalty

Great introduction to Maxima Zorreguieta’s career and life as Queen of The Netherlands!

This  is a publication on Máxima Zorreguieta (1971) and her husband King Willem-Alexander (1967). It focuses on Máxima’s education, interests and her current public posts.  You will read about her impressive career, her meeting in 1999 and subsequent secret affair with the blond man who appeared to be the Dutch Crown Prince, and -of course- her love of glamour.

Along the way, you will get to know King Willem-Alexander and his illustrious Royal predecessors. It gives a good overview of Maxima’s personality and the Dutch Royal family she has married into.

I am an art historian and Van Gogh specialist. After completing my PhD at the Courtauld I worked at Christie’s in London and at Sotheby’s in Amsterdam. I decided to set up my own business a few years ago, and I must say I love being independent! I write, publish and organize exhibitions.

I started writing the series Secrets of Van Gogh, and -much to my delight- the first book ‘The 1-Hour Van Gogh Book’ was immediately a best seller. It has now been translated into Spanish: Una Hora con van Gogh!

The second book, ‘Van Gogh’s Inner Struggle’, took me eight month to write because I wanted to re-read all his letters. But it was a fascinating and fulfilling experience. The book contains a lot of new material on his life, work and illness, revealing how the artist battled with his mental illness, the dilemma between selling and not selling. In my art history books I try to avoid jargon. Anybody with an interest in art should be able to enjoy and fully comprehend my books…! I really hope to open your eyes to the extraordinary qualities of Van Gogh’s paintings and learn about Van Gogh’s tragic life. If you understand his life you will also have a better viewing experience.

‘Van Gogh Today’ is not an art history book, but consists of short stories of contemporary people whose lives are touched some way or another by Van Gogh’s tragic life or his work. A great read!

Especially for people who want to prepare their trip to Amsterdam, I published the Amsterdam Museum E-Books, all of them lavishly illustrated with high-quality texts describing the masterpieces and highlights: The New Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House, The Hermitage Museum, The Van Gogh Museum and Things to do in Amsterdam: Museums. Since I firmly believe in the ‘Read Before You Look Concept, they can be best read before visiting the many great museums of Amsterdam. Hope you will enjoy!
