The Arx by Jay Allan Storey

The Indie Book of the Day for 22nd of November, 2015!

Genre: Mystery, Suspense

A year ago, after a mental breakdown, ex-homicide detective Frank Langer was placed on medical leave from the squad he was once hand-picked to lead. Now he spends his days drinking and chain-smoking, and his nights waking up screaming from a horrific recurring nightmare. Everything changes when he stumbles on what looks like a conspiracy to kidnap children.

When he shows up at the squad with his story, his former colleagues pat him on the back and tell him to go home. Undaunted, he digs deeper into the mystery, joined by Rebecca, the aunt of one of the missing children. She tries to help Frank confront the horrific event that led to his breakdown.

When he finally connects the pieces, the answer is more deadly than he ever imagined, and telling Rebecca would put her life in danger. Soon even she comes to question his sanity.

If Frank is right the conspiracy threatens the entire human race. But can he find someone to buy his story before it’s too late?

Born in Victoria, BC, Canada, Jay has traveled the world, passing through many places in the news today, including Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and the Swat valley in Pakistan. He has worked at an amazing variety of jobs, from cab driver to land surveyor to accordion salesman to software developer.

Jay is the author of two novels, THE ARX, and ELDORADO, a novella, CHOPPER MUSIC, and a number of short stories. A new novel is due late in 2015, and several other projects are in the works. His stories always skirt close to the edge of believability (but hopefully never cross over). He is attracted to characters who are able to break out of their stereotypes (as Jackson Reilly does in CHOPPER MUSIC) and transform themselves.

He loves both reading and writing, both listening to and playing music, and working with animals. He’s crazy for any activity relating to the water, including swimming, surfing, wind-surfing, sailing, snorkeling, and scuba diving.

Jay is married and lives in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Genre: Mystery, Thriller

When a wealthy real estate developer convinces Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Schmidt to search for his missing son, Schmitty senses trouble. Finding a body in the trunk of a BMW sends Schmitty and Megan on an adrenalized trail through Southern California unraveling a sophisticated real estate scam. A run-in with the LAPD and some hardcore gang members opens new perspectives on the case, and they begin to glimpse a shocking web of greed and corruption.

The situation suddenly becomes more complex – and personal – when the billionaire takes matters into his own hands and Schmitty’s own department gets involved. When Schmitty and Megan go to Catalina Island to track down the one man who may know everything, they uncover a secret that could make or break the billionaire. And when Schmitty miscalculates the man, it could get them killed. Before all this, Schmitty had been unfairly outcast in his department. Now he’s here to protect and serve. Debrah Martin describes herself as the ultimate multi-tasker. ‘Sometimes I even have to remind myself who I am for the day,’ she admits. That’s because she writes under three different pen names and in three very different genres. As Debrah Martin she writes literary fiction. ‘Falling Awake’ is a dream-like tale where truth IS stranger than fiction. She also plots fast-paced and compelling thrillers as D.B. Martin, with the first in the ‘Patchwork’ trilogy, ‘Patchwork Man’ winning an Indie B.R.A.G. Medallion award. And not to be overlooked is her YA teen detective series, penned as Lily Stuart – THE teenage detective. Irreverent, blunt, funny and vulnerable.

I just learned that The Girl in Black Pajamas won the NBAE Pinnacle Award for Suspense. The Girl in White Pajamas previously won the Pinnacle Award for Mystery. For almost twenty-five years, I did investigative work for small law firms conducting business in rough housing projects and crack house neighborhoods. I met with clients in every jail in the area even the now defunct Charles Street Jail and Deer Island House of Corrections. On good days, I got to take the .25 caliber handgun out of my pocket and the 9mm out of my purse and go to court. Then the real show began! Several years ago, while sitting in a courtroom with a client, I watched as a police officer was lambasted by an attorney. The attorney was defending a young woman who crashed her car into two other vehicles before she passed out drunk behind the wheel. The occupants of the other cars were seriously hurt and the cop, a former EMT, tried to assist the injured while waiting for ambulances to arrive. The attorney questioned the cop’s every move, shredded his testimony and made him seem inept. Embarrassed, the cop returned to his seat beside me and muttered, “Everybody lies. The judges lie, the lawyers lie, the witnesses lie..” I wanted to tell him not to worry that in about five years he’d be just as good a liar as they were. The seeds for The Girl in White Pajamas (the first book in the series) were planted in that courtroom.
