Going over Home by Katie Andrews Potter

The Indie Book of the Day for 7th of March, 2014!

Genre: Fantasy, History

Maddox’s life changed the day she read her real birthdate: May 17, 1820. Not 1990, like she’d been told all along. Sure, there had been clues: her mother’s old-fashioned style, the fact that her parents refuse to talk about her grandparents, but she never could have guessed they were actually from the past. And if that wasn’t enough, now she has to go back in time to live for good. She has descendants living now, and if she doesn’t go back their lives will never be.

Once she figures out how to go back in time, she struggles with the impending change her life is about to take, and her relationship with shy, unassuming Henry Yancey: the man she is supposed to marry. But if the decision to go back isn’t hard enough, she soon finds out there is someone who will stop at nothing to keep her from going back, and he’s running out of time. Will Maddie fall for Henry, and will she be able to make it back in time before the portal closes?

Katie Andrews Potter grew up in Carmel, Indiana and at an early age grew interested in her family history. She would (and still does) spend hours upon hours looking through old books and records searching for one more branch to her family tree. Katie has always enjoyed writing and has piles of old spiral-bound notebooks filled with stories. It was on one trip to an old cemetery in Brown County, Indiana in 2009 when the storyline for Going over Home popped in her head. What if you found your own name on a headstone? What would it be like to meet your ancestors? From that day on the story took a hold in her mind until it was fully formed. She is currently working on the sequel, Going over Jordan.

Katie lives on the near eastside of Indianapolis with her husband, Ben and their two children, Eliana and Micah, and a zoo of pets. She has her degree in Elementary Education and is currently working in Special Education at a local school.

Fairchild by Jaima Fixsen

The Indie Book of the Day for 30th of January, 2014!

Genre: Romance, Historical

Truth or dare? Good English families all have a house in the country with a deer park, a trout stream, and an army of gardeners. They should have a son and if it can be managed, he should be handsome. Cleverness isn’t important. Daughters in limited quantities are fine so long as they are pretty. Bastards are inconvenient and best ignored. It’s not a big problem, unless you are one.  Unfortunately, Sophy is.  Sick of her outcast role, she escapes her father’s house, only to fall from her horse during a spring storm. Injured, soaked, and shivering, she stumbles to a stranger’s door—Tom, a blunt edged merchant from a family of vulgar upstarts. Mistaking Sophy for the genuine article, he takes her in.  Sophy can’t resist twisting the truth. Soon she’s caught in her own snare—and it might just be a noose.

I was born in Alberta, Canada, and I’ve lived here ever since. I attended the University of Alberta, choosing a ‘practical’ degree in health sciences, and married my husband, Jeff, along the way, just after my twentieth birthday. Marrying young was the best thing I ever did.

At thirty I had three busy children and one busy husband. I decided it was time to take a break from my common sense career. Since I was chucking practicality anyways, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to write fiction. I’ve counted fictional characters among my best friends since my mother gave me Pierre Berton’s The Secret World of Og for my sixth birthday, but this was the first time I let myself invent my own characters and take them past the first few chapters. If I had known writing would be this addictive, I might have shied away. I do love it.

So far, I’ve only written historical fiction, but I love mysteries too and someday might try my hand at one of those. The biggest downside I’ve found to writing is that I have less time to spend immersed in my favorite books.

The Captain’s Door by C.S. Houghton

Book Description

The Captain's Door by C.S. Houghton

The Indie Book of the Day for 21st of September, 2013!

Genre: Literary, History

“I’d painted that night sky long ago, adding a star each time I lost someone I cared for deeply. Every star bore a name, and I called out each aloud as I counted.”

At the helm of a tall-ship stands Mina Paradis. She may look young, but Mina’s spent a lifetime serving her family and country. Now she’s tired, so tired, of following orders and watching her friends grow old and die while she never ages a day.

Desperate to escape the slow suffocation of a circumscribed life, Mina prepares to break the terms of her indenture. Such treason threatens to propel her through an intensely personal struggle to save herself, spare her crew, and face an adolescence long-delayed.

The Captain’s Door opens the Mina Paradis series with a unique exploration of obligation and independence set in an alternative 19th century. Fans of character-driven fantasy, like that of Ursula K. Le Guin, will appreciate the slower pace and literary build.

Memoirs of an Outlaw by Robert M. Tanner III

Book Description

Memoirs of an Outlaw by Robert M. Tanner III

The Indie Book of the Day for 12th of September, 2013!

Genre: History, Military

In Fallujah, during a particularly difficult time in the Iraq War, a group of Marines are deployed on a tour that will bring them closer together, while threatening to tear them apart. The Delta Company Outlaws are a group of Light Armored Reconnaissance Marines deployed in 2004 to one of the most hostile war zones in the world. Through the memoirs of one Marine, this touching story encapsulates the drama surrounding everyday life during the Iraq War. With a bond formed through blood, sweat, and tears, a group of unfamiliar Marines will come together stronger than family.

Memoirs of an Outlaw: Life in the Sandbox is a dramatic new take on the Iraq War that focuses more on the personal aspects of war rather than exclusively on combat. With a touching approach to the camaraderie, daily life, and devastating losses, this enlightening memoir by Robert M. Tanner delves into the brotherhood that’s formed throughout a deployment while documenting the combat experiences and daily life of a Marine. Using personal experiences, this engaging story hooks readers with drama, action, and honesty while painting an illuminating picture of both the funny and tragic sides of war.

Inspired by a bond that’s stronger than blood, Memoirs of an Outlaw began as a therapeutic way to document wartime experiences and eventually led to a full-fledged memoir. Deciding to focus on the daily life and camaraderie of war, the story captures the tension, drama, and bonding that comes with combat and living in a hostile environment far away from home. By focusing on the humanistic side of the armed forces, Memoirs of an Outlaw perfectly captures a unique moment in time during an extraordinarily challenging part of the war.

When I was a child my mother kept a black suitcase in our basement. She forbade me to look inside. Of course as we all know the way to spark a child’s curiosity is to tell them they are forbidden to do or see a particular thing. One afternoon when my mother was out, I raced down stairs. Nobody was around so I opened the suitcase. Inside I found pictures and letters in a foreign language. Later that night I asked my mother what all of it meant. She told me that she was trying to protect me by keeping the suitcase out of my reach, but since I’d found it I might as well know that she and my father both lost their entire extended families in the Holocaust. So began my obsession with the Nazi occupation of Eastern Europe. Being that my father was Romany and my mother was Jewish, I had many aspects to research and much to learn. Finally, many years later…I wrote my first novel. It is set in this period. It comes to you, along with all of my work, from my heart, with love and hopes that someday there will be understanding and tolerance among all peoples. I thank you so much for your interest in my writing.

Love, Blessings, Good Fortune, and as the Gypsies say Good Road to all of you,

Although a retired teacher, I still have a passion for working with kids. I regularly conduct Medieval Writing Workshops for local elementary/middle schools and the Colorado Girl Scouts. It seems I’m not the only one who loves Medieval Times and the King Arthur Legend. The kids thoroughly enjoy writing their own medieval stories complete with dragons, wizards, unicorns, and knights!

I love to travel, and so my other job is with a major airline. My favorite trip was a two week visit to Egypt with my husband that included traveling by local train from one end of Egypt to the other.

Some of my favorite books, like “The Hobbit,” “The Lord of the Rings,” Golding’s “Lord of the Flies” and “The Once and Future King” by T.H. White were all written to offer hope to a world embroiled in another world war. “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens illustrates how unselfish true love enables people to offer the supreme sacrifice to preserve that love, while Dostoevsky’s “Crime and Punishment” shows how circumstances can cause people to do despicable acts. The one book that connects of all of these texts as well as a multitude of others is Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero with a Thousand Faces.” The journey of the hero, depicted by Campbell, is a universal theme that never dies out.

In 406 BC, to seal a tenuous truce, the young Roman Caecilia is wedded to Vel Mastarna, an Etruscan nobleman from the city of Veii. Leaving behind a righteous Rome, Caecilia is determined to remain true to Roman virtues while living among the sinful Etruscans.
