Larken by S G Rogers

Book Description

Larken by S G Rogers

The Indie Book of the Day for 8th of June, 2015!

Genre: Historical, Romance

The sole survivor of a train accident, young Larken Burke is dubbed the Miracle Orphan. Four years later, however, her life is far from fortunate. Because of her emotional and physical scars, she believes she’s un-marriageable. With little hope for the future, she agrees to wed a gentleman she’s never met. Unfortunately, his aloof manner proves difficult to take.

Marked by romantic tragedy and the loss of his brother, Brandon King has forsworn marriage. Obliged to take in a ward, he advertises for a mail-order bride to raise the boy. Since the union is to be a marriage in name only, his criteria are youthful age, a certain level of intellect, good breeding, and that the girl shouldn’t be so ill-favored she would embarrass him in society. To his dismay, he gets more than he’d bargained for.

Will it take a miracle for Mr. and Mrs. King to fall in love, or is their marriage another accident waiting to happen?

The Big Mitt by Erik Rivenes

Book Description

The Big Mitt by Erik Rivenes

The Indie Book of the Day for 25th of November, 2014!

Genre: Mystery, Historical

Life was finally looking good for Harm Queen when New Year’s Day 1901 dawned over Minneapolis. His old crony “Doc” Ames had just been elected mayor. Queen’s promotion to chief of detectives—and a chance to line his pockets—was in the bag. Then, a gruesome crime at a Hell’s Half Acre brothel brings Queen’s ambitions to a screeching halt. The mayor’s brother and Queen’s new boss, Colonel Fred Ames, seems hell-bent on thwarting his investigation. To make matters even more difficult, Queen’s courtship of Karoline, an upright young Norwegian woman, is imperiled by the appearance of a seductive prostitute with her own game to play. As Queen digs deeper among the gangsters, gaslights and political machinations of turn-of-the-century Minneapolis, he finds himself on the trail of a sinister hobo with apocalyptic ambitions. In The Big Mitt, Erik Rivenes shines a colorful light on a treacherous and corrupt chapter from a great city’s forgotten past.

Erik Rivenes writes late at night when the rest of the world sleeps. He has an unnatural obsession with early American history, especially history that crawls through dank sewers, slips through underground passages into brothel basements, or wheels and deals in smokey back rooms of rancid-smelling saloons.

He also likes more normal things as well, like hiking, farmer’s markets, Calvin and Hobbes comics, watching old James Cagney films, Dairy Queen sundaes, and laying on the grass on summer days and staring directly into the sun.

He shares his time between Minneapolis, MN, Portland, OR and Taipei, Taiwan.

Love Abideth Still by Scott R. Rezer

Book Description

Love Abideth Still by Scott R. Rezer

The Indie Book of the Day for 10th of August, 2014!

Genre: Literary, Historical

March, 1863. The War Between the States has raged for nearly two years.

Five months after his death, the body of Sarah’s estranged husband, a Union soldier, finally comes home for burial in Philadelphia. Taylor’s burial, though, rather than putting her unresolved grief to rest, begins a journey that will not just test her faith, but will plumb the depths of her devotion to her dead husband.

When anger and sorrow push her to the edge of despair, Sarah turns to the few letters sent to her by Taylor from the frontlines in a desperate need to understand the guilt she feels over his death. But, as the war continues to tear the nation asunder and rumors of a Confederate invasion threaten the North, Sarah’s own sense of patriotic duty begins to awaken. And with that newfound obligation, she discovers in the letters she once dismissed as weak attempts to convince her of his duty to the nation, that Taylor’s voice has the power to soften a heart grown bitter and cold from beyond the grave. Taylor’s letters, though, do not tell the full story of his life as a soldier, a story Sarah will never know…

From the bloody battlefields of Winchester and Bull Run to the quiet streets of Philadelphia, Love Abideth Still is a fictional story based upon the lives of the author’s Civil War ancestors whose sacrifice–like so many others who loved and lost during the War Between the States–has not been forgotten. It is a moving story of war and forgiveness, one in which a young woman discovers that it is possible to fall in love again with her husband even when separated from him by the finality of death.

USA Today Bestselling and Award-winning novelist Bette Lee Crosby brings the wit and wisdom of her Southern Mama to works of fiction–the result is a delightful blend of humor, mystery and romance along with a cast of quirky charters who will steal your heart away.

Born in Detroit and raised in a plethora of states scattered across the South and Northeast, Crosby originally studied art and began her career as a packaging designer. When asked to write a few lines of copy for the back of a pantyhose package, she discovered a love for words that was irrepressible. After years of writing for business, she turned to works of fiction and never looked back. “Storytelling is in my blood,” Crosby laughingly admits, “My mom was not a writer, but she was a captivating storyteller, so I find myself using bits and pieces of her voice in most everything I write.”
