Book Description

Akin by Robin Murarka

The Indie Book of the Day for 26th of June, 2014!

Genre: Literary, Coming of Age

Akin takes place in a time void of technology and full of lore passed down by generations of ancient cultures. Across an arid land lay scattered city states and villages of people separated by social and political hierarchies. Through this vast archaic world, Akin manages to illustrate vivid human experiences that are unquestionably universal, regardless of the places we live or where we come from.

The novel centers on the journey of a boy whose struggle for survival begins when his thoughts and ideas begin diverging from values he was raised to follow. As he traverses into adulthood, his eyes open to truths about his family and community that his young mind had previously been incapable of understanding. Haunting memories of events witnessed as a child drift through his mind, creating rifts and questions he is forbidden to ask.

A tale of suffering, hope, and the human condition told against the grueling scenery of an immeasurable desert terrain, Akin is a powerful story brimming with a rare humanity.

Melvyn R. Ostrov, MD, FAAAAI was born in Brooklyn, New York toward the end of the Great Depression, growing up in the Brighton Beach section during the 1940s. His parents were immigrants who had met in that neighborhood. Neither one ever had the opportunity of attending high school. Both worked, earning just enough money to pay for food and apartment rent. Clothes for the children were hand-me-downs from relatives. Mother sewed at home for a manufacturer and plucked chickens in a shop, while Father worked in the subway tunnels. The family could not afford a car or a telephone. Melvyn attended public schools. After school, he babysat for his younger brother and sister while his parents were away working. Upon graduating from elementary school he was awarded the Science Medal. At puberty he attended Abraham Lincoln High School where he won a position on the Freshman Math Team. The family eventually moved to a different Brooklyn neighborhood where they lived in their first real house. The change of location required that Melvyn had to transfer to James Madison High School where he first became known as “Mel.” After graduation, he attended Brooklyn College, tuition-free for Brooklyn residents. Following graduation from Chicago Medical School he served a residency in Internal Medicine at Kings County hospital followed by Allergy/Asthma at The Jewish Hospital of Brooklyn. While there, he began serving as an editor for the Journal of Allergy. By then, he was married with two children. Dr. Ostrov served two years in the Army during the Vietnam War, honorably discharged with the rank of Major and settled in Connecticut where he practiced, specializing in Allergies and Asthma. During that time, he published numerous medical articles relating to his specialty in local newspapers and had one published in Self magazine. At the latest count, he now has four grandchildren. His novel, “Mud Castles,” was written for them.

The law of unintended consequences. Years ago, my son who was then in 6th grade, wrote a short story. I enjoyed it so much that I turned it into a novel. I then wrote a sequel at the request of the kids who read the original story.(Trouble at Soaring Eagle is available on Kindle).

In the sequel I named a character for a neighbor’s 9 year old girl and said she was boy crazy. When her mother read the story to her she cried. She hated boys. I felt bad and asked what I might write about to make her smile. She said the girl, Eloise, liked to fly in her dreams.

The next day I began Flying Girl, the first book of what would eventually be a 12 book serial called Egg and the Hameggattic Sisterhood.

I never expected to publish my work. I kept writing because Eloise and other girls her age kept reading and enjoying the stories.

The storyline evolved over time. The first 6 books, written for 6 to 10 year olds, tells of Egg (the initials of my heroine) and the flying suit and mysterious jewelry given to her by her grandmother.

The last 6 books chronicles Egg’s journey to the mythical planet Aerianna to save that world from the evil Mobius. It is there she meets dragons, sea serpents and a host of other characters. These books are 2 to 3 times longer than the first six and are better suited for 8 to 10 year olds.

Egg’s adventure is all good, clean fun and based on experience with friends and relatives, a great series for moms and grandmothers to read to their child or grandchild.

Since I finished the first series, I have written a prequel to the series titled Rose’Alynnia, a second 4-book adventure called Zynn-Zaz’zia and a third adventure entitled The Serenity Deception. The series concludes with a three book set called Sisterhood’s End.

Thank you for your interest.

Michael was born during a blizzard in the late 70’s. He grew up in the Northern NY Boonies. Luckily he had no cable TV, but he did possess the power to turn an ordinary stick into anything imaginable. He spent his first decade of life fighting monsters, aliens, and Sith lords. Having been unsuccessfully taught how to sit down, shut up, get in line, and raise his hand to pee, he quit school the first day of his senior year of high school. Along with his band members and girlfriend, Michael took a greyhound bus to California, something he had always dreamed of doing. After nine months and many crazy experiences and soup kitchens later, he and his girlfriend returned to NY with a baby on the way. Joining the workforce with blue hair and no education that mattered to the “real world trolls” he began to work toward supporting his new family. Three years later the family grew with the addition of a baby girl. Michael spent 14 years at a Casino being the best poker dealer in NY, and later as the best boss in the world. (Hey man, I’m just repeating what they say). He has recently quit his day job to focus on writing full-time. Michael is still married to his high school sweetheart. His hobbies include reading, cooking, gardening, researching the spiritual and mental enslavement of his fellow humans, working out, playing guitar, bass, and drums. He is patiently waiting for the world to take the red pill. Above all else, Michael enjoys beating the odds.

Red Clover by Florence Osmund

Book Description

Red Clover by Florence Osmund

The Indie Book of the Day for 11th of June, 2014!

Genre: Literary, Coming of Age

Imagine feeling like an outsider. Now imagine feeling like an outsider in your own family.

Evanston, Illinois. Lee Oliver Winekoop is born into extreme wealth, but despite his near genius IQ, he doesnʾt have the resourcefulness to realize any of its benefits. His motherʾs passive parenting style and frequent absences from their lakefront mansion leave him in the care of nannies as a child even when sheʾs home, making Lee feel unwanted and alone. Further undermining his self-worth is his fatherʾs inexplicable contempt toward him. If Lee only knew why his parents disliked him so, he would fix whatever it was he was doing wrong, and remove the invisible barrier that keeps him from fitting in.

Lee wants nothing more than to be like his two older brothers—successful at everything they do, sons who make their parents proud—even if it means buying into the familyʾs philosophy that money is the answer to oneʾs success in life.

In the thick of Leeʾs discontent, his motherʾs favorite uncle dies and leaves him a sizable inheritance—an inheritance with some bizarre strings attached. But as soon as he tries to start using it to mold an identity for himself, his world is turned upside-down when he learns shocking family secrets—causing him to rethink who he is and where heʾs going.

Readers will find Leeʾs reinvention of himself on his journey into manhood surprising; the roadblocks he confronts unnerving; and the cast of characters he befriends along the way both heartwarming and amusing.

Circuits of the Wind by Michael Stutz

The Indie Book of the Day for 20th of April, 2014!

Genre: Literary, Coming of Age

The Internet is everywhere now, but Ray Valentine saw it first explode.

Circuits of the Wind, a coming-of-age novel in three volumes, is the very human story of Ray’s quest to find himself as he grows up online, wandering the computer underground–the wild, global outback that existed before the net went mainstream. How else does an end-of-century slacker reach out to the world from Sohola, that northern state that’s a little more Midwest than it is New England? The net holds the key to what he’s after–but even as he pioneers this virtual world, the veneer of his real life begins to crack.

In Volume One of the novel, we follow a young Raymond from his ’70s childhood–and first gropings with the telephone–to the home computers and bulletin boards of the ’80s, where he leads a double life as a wanderer of the wires. But when even his virtual best friend unplugs, Raymond might have to leave it, too–because isn’t real life supposed to be offline?
