Book Description

STUPID MODEL by Barbara de Vries

The Indie Book of the Day for 6th of May, 2014!

Genre: Literary, Biographical

Set in Paris, Stupid Model traces the hilarious and sometimes heart-wrenching story of seventeen year old Dutch fashion model Bee who learns that the highs and lows of modeling and international travel are not always so glamorous, as she finds herself sharing an apartment with the world’s first Supermodel Janice Dickenson, is talked out of her clothes by a well-known photographer and thrown into the street by a famous Parisian couturier.

Unlike most model books Stupid Model is a caricature of the fashion business, in which Bee stumbles through her initial experiences in Paris with a combination of fear and naiveté and a forthrightness that comes out at all the wrong times, in all the wrong places. She goes from one moment to the next hoping to acquire the skill of seeming shallow and cheery, with thick yet flawless skin and a willingness to remove her top. She longs for the approval of her notorious roommate, who lectures her on the rules for success in Paris. Bee tries to emulate her but when Janice says, “Yo Dutch, I am Supermodel and you’re just stupid model,” the admiration turns sour. Throughout her crazy adventures Bee tries to come to terms with how people perceive models and ends up booking the trip of a lifetime to far away Australia.

Stupid Model in Paris is based on the real life experiences of the author, ex-model Barbara de Vries, and is illustrated with drawings and pictures from her original journal.

My work is my life, my life is my work… ( tweeting exempted)

I was born in Amsterdam, made clothes for myself, made satin pants for friends in bands, carved and sold leather belts and hippy-ish jewelry, became a model, lived in Paris, eventually did shows for Yves Saint Laurent, lived in Australia, was a Cosmo cover girl, lived in London, modeled for Vogue and Bazaar, dated a few notorious English men, went to the Royal College of Art to study fashion, had my own post punk collection called Giraf, held runway shows during London Fashion Week, closed Giraf in a UK recession, moved to New York, worked for Calvin Klein as Director of Design, launched CK with Kate Moss and Mark Wahlberg inside the clothes I designed, burned out, divorced Calvin, launched my own collection, met my husband, converted an old terra cotta factory into our live/work home, had my first daughter, added a children’s wear collection, had twin daughters, closed the children’s wear collection, added freelance work for Ralph Lauren, Dim, Go Silk and Pantone, became less interested in fashion, moved to the Upper Delaware mountains 90 mins from NYC, design and publish lifestyle books, moved to Miami (no, not entirely), wrote a novel…

Its a work/life under construction and I apologize for any inconvenience it may cause…
