David grew up in the north east of England, where he went on to study English Literature at The University of Sunderland. After graduating, he started to write his first fictional stories, but always felt that to become a truly accomplished writer he would need to significantly broaden his horizons. Therefore, just days after his 27th birthday, he bought a one-way ticket to Sydney, Australia.

He spent 2 years in the land down under and travelled through every far flung corner of the country, earning his keep by taking up jobs doing everything from pruning grape vines to driving tractors. In his spare time he vowed to try every new experience that was offered his way, no matter how crazy. He climbed glaciers, swam with sharks, jumped from aeroplanes and pretty much tried to live life as much as possible.

During his time overseas, he was also fortunate enough to meet the love of his life; Katie. Upon the couple’s return to the UK in 2009, what was originally intended as a birthday present (a travel journal recounting their time in Asia) helped him to rediscover his vocation in life. He has been writing like a mad man ever since.

All of David’s novels are inspired to some extent by his own travels and he writes the kind of books that he would want to read. Far too impatient to spend months waiting for impersonal rejections from literary agents, he decided to publish his work himself. Ultimately, he just wants people to enjoy reading his books as much as he enjoys writing them.

All of his novels are written in standard British English.

Twisted by Uvi Poznansky

Book Description

Twisted by Uvi Poznansky

The Indie Book of the Day for 27th of June, 2014!

Genre: Literary, Dark Fantasy

In this unique collection, Uvi Poznansky brings together diverse tales, laden with shades of mystery. Here, you will come into a dark, strange world, a hyper-reality where nearly everything is firmly rooted in the familiar—except for some quirky detail that twists the yarn, and takes it for a spin in an unexpected direction.

This is the reality you will see in hell, through the eyes of a ghost of a woman, trying to reclaim her name by appealing to the devil; the eyes of a clay figure of a woman, about to be fired in the kiln, longing for her Creator; the eyes of a woman in the midst of a free fall, about to become a ghost; and the eyes of a feline creature with cracked fangs, trying in vain to resign herself, by hook and by crook, to being locked. These characters explore their identity, and challenge their fate.

Inspired by her art and by literature, these tales come from different times and places. Yet all of them share one thing in common: an unusual mind, one that is twisted. So prepare yourself: keep the lights on.

She earned her B. A. in Architecture and Town Planning from the Technion in Haifa, Israel. Akin by Robin Murarka

The Indie Book of the Day for 26th of June, 2014!

Genre: Literary, Coming of Age

Akin takes place in a time void of technology and full of lore passed down by generations of ancient cultures. Across an arid land lay scattered city states and villages of people separated by social and political hierarchies. Through this vast archaic world, Akin manages to illustrate vivid human experiences that are unquestionably universal, regardless of the places we live or where we come from.

The novel centers on the journey of a boy whose struggle for survival begins when his thoughts and ideas begin diverging from values he was raised to follow. As he traverses into adulthood, his eyes open to truths about his family and community that his young mind had previously been incapable of understanding. Haunting memories of events witnessed as a child drift through his mind, creating rifts and questions he is forbidden to ask.

A tale of suffering, hope, and the human condition told against the grueling scenery of an immeasurable desert terrain, Akin is a powerful story brimming with a rare humanity.

I am a bookworm, no surprise there. My go-to bookworm happy place is an old library in a stately manor on a cold winter’s night. The wind howls as the storm whips snowflakes against the floor-to-ceiling windows and the soft drumming of interspersed rain on the window pane harmonizes with the old grandfather clock in the corner. With an old book in my hands, the pages smooth under my fingers, I snuggle up in an armchair in front of a roaring fire in a massive stone fireplace. The flames dance as they send their warmth to envelop me. Warming my hands on a mug of hot chocolate, I inhale in the small puffs of chocolatey goodness rising up, mixing with the air I breathe.

Have I ever been to my bookworm happy place? I’m afraid not. Something is always missing. Mostly the library in the stately manor. Occasionally the snowflakes, especially in summer.

Melvyn R. Ostrov, MD, FAAAAI was born in Brooklyn, New York toward the end of the Great Depression, growing up in the Brighton Beach section during the 1940s. His parents were immigrants who had met in that neighborhood. Neither one ever had the opportunity of attending high school. Both worked, earning just enough money to pay for food and apartment rent. Clothes for the children were hand-me-downs from relatives. Mother sewed at home for a manufacturer and plucked chickens in a shop, while Father worked in the subway tunnels. The family could not afford a car or a telephone. Melvyn attended public schools. After school, he babysat for his younger brother and sister while his parents were away working. Upon graduating from elementary school he was awarded the Science Medal. At puberty he attended Abraham Lincoln High School where he won a position on the Freshman Math Team. The family eventually moved to a different Brooklyn neighborhood where they lived in their first real house. The change of location required that Melvyn had to transfer to James Madison High School where he first became known as “Mel.” After graduation, he attended Brooklyn College, tuition-free for Brooklyn residents. Following graduation from Chicago Medical School he served a residency in Internal Medicine at Kings County hospital followed by Allergy/Asthma at The Jewish Hospital of Brooklyn. While there, he began serving as an editor for the Journal of Allergy. By then, he was married with two children. Dr. Ostrov served two years in the Army during the Vietnam War, honorably discharged with the rank of Major and settled in Connecticut where he practiced, specializing in Allergies and Asthma. During that time, he published numerous medical articles relating to his specialty in local newspapers and had one published in Self magazine. At the latest count, he now has four grandchildren. His novel, “Mud Castles,” was written for them.

Kim wrote her first critically acclaimed (if you call her fourth grade teacher a critic, and she does) short story when she was 9 years old. It was about Christmas in a Cave, and it featured such topical, ground-breaking subjects as homelessness & cave dwelling. She’s been writing ever since. The state of publication depends on who you ask.

She has a Ph.D. in Literature, with specialties in American Lit, Women Writers, Feminism, Sci-Fi/Fantasy & Film Studies but please don’t hold any of that against her. She sometimes teaches academic writing and how to read literature at a university in her hometown and tries to convince college students that it really is cool to like poetry.

She lives in the South, has twin children (one girl, one boy) and a husband who is the model for all her best romantic heroes. She also has two cats– one black and sassy, one stripey and fat.

Even before she pulled on her first set of combats, Alison Morton was fascinated by the idea of women soldiers. Brought up by a feminist mother and an ex-military father, it never occurred to her that women couldn’t serve their country in the armed forces. Everybody in her family had done time in uniform and in theatre.

Busy in her day job, Alison joined the Territorial Army in a special communications regiment and left as a captain, having done all sorts of interesting and exciting things no civilian would ever know or see. Or that she can talk about, even now…

But but something else fuels her writing… Fascinated by the mosaics at Ampurias (Spain), at their creation by the complex, power and value-driven Roman civilisation started her wondering what a modern Roman society would be like if run by strong women…

Patriarch Run by Benjamin Dancer

Book Description

Devil's Lake by Aaron Paul Lazar

The Indie Book of the Day for 13th of June, 2015!

Genre: Literary, Suspense

Billy discovers that his father might be a traitor, that he was deployed to safeguard the United States from a cyberattack on its military networks. After that mission, his father disappeared along with the Chinese technology he was ordered to steal–a weapon powerful enough to sabotage the digital infrastructure of the modern age and force the human population into collapse.

The story follows all three members of the Erikson family:

After Billy’s estranged father shows up at his high school, along with a pair of hostile gunmen, Billy hurries home to find the kitchen on fire–his mother missing. Forced into a split-second decision, he runs from the approaching sheriff in an attempt to find his mom.

Her worry for Billy the only concern on her mind, Rachel outwits her captors. Jack left them ten years ago. He had no right to bring her son into this.

Jack’s entire past is on a collision course with the present. Sophisticated operators from three nations are hunting him. Jack’s disillusionment with Washington, his concerns about the fraying fabric of global stability–it all comes down to a single decision: he must choose between the mission and his family.

PATRIARCH RUN is a thoughtful and character-driven, coming-of-age story. Against a backdrop of suspense, the novel explores the archetypal themes of fatherhood, rites of passage and self-acceptance.

Aaron Paul Lazar wasn’t always a mystery writer. It wasn’t until eight members of his family and friends died within five years that the urge to write became overwhelming. “When my father died, I lost it. I needed an outlet, and writing provided the kind of solace I couldn’t find elsewhere.”

Lazar created the Gus LeGarde mystery series, with the founding novel, DOUBLE FORTÉ (2004), a chilling winter mystery set in the Genesee Valley of upstate New York. Like Lazar’s father, protagonist Gus LeGarde is a classical music professor. Gus, a grandfather, gardener, chef, and nature lover, plays Chopin etudes to feed his soul and thinks of himself as a “Renaissance man caught in the 21st century.” This book has since be rereleased in 2012 as an “author’s preferred edition,” via Twilight Times Books.

The creation of the series lent Lazar the comfort he sought, yet in the process, a new passion was unleashed. Obsessed with his parallel universe, he now lives, breathes, and dreams about his characters, and has written ten LeGarde mysteries in eight years. (UPSTAGED – 2005; TREMOLO: CRY OF THE LOON – 2007 Twilight Times Books; MAZURKA – 2009 Twilight Times Books, FIRESONG – 2011, DON’T LET THE WIND CATCH YOU – 2013, VIRTUOSO – 2014, with more to come.) The author has just completed his twenty-first novel.

One day while rototilling his gardens, Lazar unearthed a green cat’s eye marble, which prompted the new paranormal mystery series featuring Sam Moore, retired country doctor and passionate gardener. The green marble, a powerful talisman, connects all three of the books in the series, whisking Sam back in time to uncover his brother’s dreadful fate fifty years earlier. (HEALEY’S CAVE, 2010; TERROR COMES KNOCKING, 2011; FOR KEEPS, 2012) Lazar intends to continue both series.

Lazar’s books feature breathless chase scenes, nasty villains, and taut suspense, but are also intensely human stories, replete with kids, dogs, horses, food, romance, and humor. The author calls them, “country mysteries,” although reviewers have dubbed them “literary mysteries.”

“It seems as though every image ever impressed upon my brain finds its way into my work. Whether it’s the light dancing through stained-glass windows in a Parisian chapel, curly slate-green lichen covering a boulder at the edge of a pond in Maine, or hoarfrost dangling from a cherry tree branch in mid-winter, these images burrow into my memory cells. In time they bubble back, persistently itching, until they are poured out on the page.”

In 2009, Kodak gave him up for grabs, and during the year off before he landed in his coveted new job with KB America, he had time to explore and reconnect with his environment. Larken by S G Rogers

The Indie Book of the Day for 8th of June, 2015!

Genre: Historical, Romance

The sole survivor of a train accident, young Larken Burke is dubbed the Miracle Orphan. Four years later, however, her life is far from fortunate. Because of her emotional and physical scars, she believes she’s un-marriageable. With little hope for the future, she agrees to wed a gentleman she’s never met. Unfortunately, his aloof manner proves difficult to take.

Marked by romantic tragedy and the loss of his brother, Brandon King has forsworn marriage. Obliged to take in a ward, he advertises for a mail-order bride to raise the boy. Since the union is to be a marriage in name only, his criteria are youthful age, a certain level of intellect, good breeding, and that the girl shouldn’t be so ill-favored she would embarrass him in society. To his dismay, he gets more than he’d bargained for.

Will it take a miracle for Mr. and Mrs. King to fall in love, or is their marriage another accident waiting to happen?
