Mother of Wolves by Zoe Brooks

The Indie Book of the Day for 20th of May, 2013!

Genre: Literary, Fantasy

When the King of the Roads is betrayed by his uncle to his murderers, his wife Lupa finds herself alone in a man’s world of tribal politics and war.

Everyone underestimates Lupa, if they consider her at all. They are making a mistake. Lupa has made a promise to her husband to avenge his death and Lupa is a woman of her word. Her quest takes her away from the tents of her travelling people to the town of the Others, where her husband’s eyeless head watches as she takes her first revenge.

Now on the run, through the marshes and rich farmland of the great river, Lupa hunts and is hunted by her husband’s murderers. On the estuary islands her sons and their protector are just one step ahead of the killers. But revenge is not simple and Lupa must face a choice, one which will have great consequences for her people. For this is more than a revenge story, it is the tale of the rise of a woman leader and the price she pays for that rise. It is the story of a travelling people, persecuted by settlers and their armies, and the woman who leads them at the time of their greatest peril.

The Witch Hunter by Nicole R Taylor

Book Description

The Witch Hunter by Nicole R Taylor

The Indie Book of the Day for 18th of May, 2013!

Genre: Romance, Fantasy

I was born into the world covered in blood, and that’s exactly the way I left it. Ever since, I have been damned to walk the boundary between life and death alone. Unwillingly turned and left to my nightmare, I have seen men commit countless horrors and committed many of my own. My origins shall remain unknown, my true self hidden. I have been called by many names, but in this life I am known as the Witch Hunter. I have been asleep these past 150 years, until I was awoken by a haunting call.

Zachary Degaud was twenty three when he died. The problem was, he didn’t stay that way. Present day, he’s just another vampire with another unremarkable story. That is, until he manages to provoke a two thousand year old witch named Katrin, who wants to make him pay in the most horrible way imagined. Along with his brother Sam, newly made vampire Liz and their only witch ally, Gabby, his only chance for survival is to summon the ancient and unpredictable vampire known as the Witch Hunter. Zac is just looking for a way out of his psychopathic witch problems, but instead will find himself falling head first into a blood feud that has stretched thousands of years.

Aya has been asleep for the past 150 years, until she was awoken by a haunting call. The witch she has been hunting for thousands of years, Katrin, has resurfaced and marked a young, annoyingly arrogant vampire by the name of Zachary Degaud. Unless she does something, he will die a slow and painful death. He has given her an opportunity to end the witch, but does she want to help him or leave him to his fate? Zac will get under her skin like no one else has and she just might find herself making the ultimate sacrifice before he is gone forever.

They will both have to choose sides and look deep within themselves before the end. But, what Zac learns about himself, will surprise him most of all.

Fall asleep! It’s Easy… by Elli Yeates

Book Description

Fall asleep! It's Easy... by Elli Yeates

The Indie Book of the Day for 17th of May, 2013!

Genre: Non Fiction, Fitness

Are you having trouble falling asleep? Are you waking in the middle of the night and tossing and turning for hours only to drop off just before your alarm goes off? Is your sleep becoming something that you worry about? Then you need to read this book. The most common reaction from readers after reading this book is – that can’t work, it’s too easy. But falling asleep is meant to be easy…right? The method described is simple but it does take a definite effort on your part to make it work. It’s called the miraculous Kaleidoscope Method because just like magic the simple process seems to occupy your mind and let your body take over and get what it needs. The next thing you will know is it is morning. Even if you don’t think it will work it still will. One of my friends was recalling her teenage daughter saying that the last thing she remembered thinking before waking up in the morning was, ‘This isn’t working!’. This book is quick to read – 10 to 15 minutes should do it. It uses no drugs or equipment. Once you have paid for the book you will have the process to use for the rest of your life. It gets easier and faster each time you use it. Knowing you can get back to sleep quickly will stop you from worrying about waking up. You will stop waking up so often. My favorite part – sometimes you can feel your body falling asleep; it’s like receiving a shot of anesthetic and as it spreads from limb to limb they fall asleep. That’s when you know you are just about to drop off. There is a checklist to ensure you are not doing something during the day that is stopping you from sleeping at night. It works even 30 minutes before your alarm is set to go off. It puts you back in charge of your sleep. Read the comments from other readers below, then buy the book and remember how it feels to have a great nights sleep!

Bias Cut by Morgan Richter

Book Description

Bias Cut by Morgan Richter

The Indie Book of the Day for 16th of May, 2013!

Genre: Literary, Mystery

Burned out and bitter after a string of disappointments, Nicola Strozyk takes a short-term gig assisting Laurie Sparks, the design world’s reigning enfant terrible. Barely in his twenties, Laurie has built himself an empire that encompasses a chic Manhattan boutique and a role on an obnoxious reality series. Part worldly sophisticate and part cheerful scatterbrain, Laurie is beautiful and extravagant; at nearly twice his age, Nicola is jaded and resolutely unglamorous. As Laurie’s burgeoning fame threatens to overwhelm him, Nicola finds herself struggling to keep him on solid ground.

When Laurie becomes obsessed with tracking down the designer of a mysterious coat, he drags Nicola along on a champagne-fueled quest that takes them from the New York catwalks to glittery Hollywood parties and swanky suites in Paris hotels. What begins as a lark takes an ominous turn when they uncover a decades-old mystery involving the murders of two young models. Along the way, the odd-couple camaraderie between Nicola and Laurie evolves into a fierce bond, which is put to the test when she must protect him from a pair of deadly threats: a mercurial fellow designer hell-bent on burying a dark secret, and an obsessive killer who has fixed his sights on Laurie.

Nick has experience as a theatre performer, having appeared in local productions spanning musical theatre, straight plays and opera. He most recently performed the title role in The Play of Daniel, a non-liturgical, medieval musical drama based on the biblical story of Daniel (and written entirely in Latin–not for the faint of heart!).

Nick’s other major written works include Stiller the Farling, a YA fantasy novel (unpublished), The Perfect Circle, a contemporary Australian musical with Hobart-based composer Craig M. Wood (CMWMusic.net), and Toast, a one-act play. Nick is currently working on a second musical project with Craig, a dark technological thriller with cyberpunk themes set in a parallel Ireland. Yep, actually.

Though passionate about entertainment in general, Nick has a particular fondness for the video game industry. He wishes he had more time to play games.

Chosen by Heather Fleener

Book Description

Chosen by Heather Fleener

The Indie Book of the Day for 14th of May, 2013!

Genre: Romance, Fantasy

In the beginning…there were Vampire

Man’s fall from grace sparked the birth of the Dark creatures from the underworld. To counter the explicit threat to mankind, divinely-created immortals were brought forth. The Witch encompassed seven Castes of power; their magic was most effective against the nefarious agenda pursued by the evil ones.

She is Chosen

Kaitriana’s gift of magic is unrivaled. A descendant of the most powerful Ancient in existence, her birth was foretold ages before her time. Destined to lead the Witch faction, she is betrayed by her own kind, destroying her birthright and all hope of delivering the Realm from the sinister shadow of the Ancient Dark.

He is the Key

Lorcan is a mighty warlord in the Vampire species. His animosity towards the magical immortals is personal – his mother was their Queen. Having long since severed all ties with his former kin, his existence remains plagued by the repercussions of her treachery and a secret that threatens to be his downfall.

They are the Prophecy

An arcane prophecy from the time of the Ancients proclaims that only two in all of creation can bring peace to the Realm. When Kaitriana miraculously appears seeking his protection, Lorcan must forsake his duty and disregard the dictates of his breed to shelter the female. Together they must combat the Ancient Dark and surmount the forces within their own factions that would oppose the Prophecy. Their fates have always been entwined and only when joined can they triumph over a blood feud that has shadowed the Light for millennia.

Heather Fleener lives in Indiana with her husband, D.A. and their twins, Thomas and Alexandra. Professionally she has spent her career working in the area of Intellectual Property law.

Reading has been a passion of hers since she was young and she has been a closet-romance junkie her entire life. The romantic styles of Judith McNaught and Julie Garwood are her inspiration, though she has read and loved the stories of countless other authors. Her fascination with the paranormal began to form at the young age of six, watching late-night ghost and vampire movies with her Grandpa. Unfortunately, as a result, she also remains afraid of the dark to this day.

Combining her love of epic romances and the supernatural was a natural progression for her overactive imagination. When the idea for the Ancients of Light series began, it was an abstract story line rambling around in her head to help kill a few miles on the treadmill. As the stories and plotlines continued to grow, it finally became necessary to put the words to paper and build the characters that had been living in the Realm and having conversations in her head for months.

Ancients of Light is a series of thirteen novels – a testament to many miles on the treadmill and lots of characters that insist on having their stories told.

Sara “Furlong” Burr was born on February 1, 1982, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. At an early age, when it became apparent she wouldn’t have the luxury of skating through life on her looks or athletic prowess, Sara found her true passion in writing. While in fifth grade, she wrote her first “novel”(whose name escapes her at the moment) about five friends who win a trip to Hawaii. At ninety-something pages, it was her crowning achievement during her childhood (you may now begin drawing your own conclusions on how sad a childhood Sara actually had).

After focusing much of her adult life on her family and career as a paralegal, Sara found the voices in her head becoming unrelenting and she returned to her true passion. Currently, she’s working on the sequel to Enigma Black entitled Vendetta Nation. She’s also tossing around ideas for a chick-lit book about two ill-fated lovers (Lord, help her).

When she’s not writing, Sara enjoys reading (pretty much a given), attempting to garden, shopping (prerequisite to being a woman), and spending time with her family and friends who somehow manage to tolerate her numerous disappearances propagated by infrequent bouts of inspiration.

I’m Joe Gonzales and I’m a photographer and cinematographer during the day. At night, I transform into a writer and embark on adventures… Inside my head ;D

I’m interested in a lot of things, but foremost of these is my love of people. I just love talking to people and getting to know them, and I think this shows a little bit on my writing.

I also love tacos a bit too much but it doesn’t reflect with my work. Unfortunately.

I REALLY want to write for a living and I would appreciate your support.

Thank you!

Sleeping Beauty by John Phythyon

Book Description

Sleeping Beauty by John Phythyon

The Indie Book of the Day for 8th of May, 2013!

Genre: Children’s, Literary

He wanted to save her. He got it all wrong.

Carl is the only one left. All Beth’s friends were sad when she fell into a coma two years ago at the age of fourteen. But life moved on, and so did they. Except Carl. He still comes to see her. He still visits two to three times a week, talking to her and hoping she will wake.

Her mother, Marie, is insane. She stares constantly through a thick haze of cigarette smoke at Carl whenever he visits Beth, watching him, evaluating, plotting.

Marie knows the truth. She knows why Beth is in that coma. She knows it was Rex, Beth’s father, who did it. She knows he hired a witch to cast a spell on her Pretty Princess until she is old enough to marry, until his hand-picked protégé wakes her with True Love’s First Kiss.

But if whomever Rex chooses can break the curse, then so can Carl. He’s loved Beth since he first met her in Sixth Grade. Marie knows. She has a plan. And maybe she’s not as crazy as everyone thinks.

First, though, she’ll have to convince Carl to believe in magic. Then she’ll have to encourage him to defy Rex. That won’t be easy. Rex hates Carl. He put Beth into that coma to keep Carl away from her. And Rex has a wicked temper.

Marie is determined, though. She’s going to get her Sleeping Beauty back. And Carl is going to help . . . whether he likes it or not.

Can True Love’s First Kiss really break the curse, or are darkness, insanity, and self-doubt too strong?

Set in modern times, “Sleeping Beauty” is a creepy reimagining of the original fairy tale. Much like ABC’s Once Upon A Time, it offers a fresh look at an old story.

It explores what happens when parents go too far to protect their children. All parents struggle deciding when to hold on tightly to their children and when to let go. Rex and Marie get it all wrong. A cautionary tale, “Sleeping Beauty” reminds us there is a fine line between love and obsession, between care and cruelty.

Mali Apple

When I was a week old, the doctor came out of the examining room and told my parents, “I have good news and I have bad news. The good news is, she’s not completely blind.” Rather than limiting who I was to become, though, my visual challenges inspired me to more fully develop my other senses, especially my intuitive senses. In this way, my partial blindness has made an enormous contribution to who I am today.

In the household where I was raised, the word “love” was never spoken. Accusations, defensiveness, frustration, and anger were daily realities. Rather than crushing my spirit, though, these conditions ignited a passion in me to discover how to create and sustain truly happy, healthy relationships–relationships in which everyone feels loved, nurtured, and supported in becoming their very best selves.

I believe that in knowing how to allow everything that happens to actually contribute to our growth and happiness, we can realize our greatest potential in every area of our lives. And when two people know how to do this together, their relationship becomes truly magical–as well as a source of inspiration that ripples out into the world beyond them. Through books, videos, courses, motivational audios, and our Facebook community (The Soulmate Experience), my lover, partner, and best friend Joe Dunn and I are committed to helping others create and sustain such relationships.

Joe Dunn

My first few years were spent in the blistering heat of Sonora, Mexico, where I developed a lifelong love of the language, the country, and the soul-filled people. Since then I’ve been blessed to be able to make my home in beautiful Northern California.

I am a father to two incredible young adults and will be forever grateful for the experience of helping to guide them along their own paths. I’m also an entrepreneur, a relationship coach, a national champion swimmer, and best friend and lover to my partner, Mali Apple. Mali and I have spent most of the last nine years exploring what makes profoundly connected relationships possible, and, just as importantly, how to keep them vibrant and compelling. Sharing our discoveries with others through books, videos, courses, and motivational audios has become our passion. Our Facebook community (The Soulmate Experience) is a relationship oasis where tens of thousands of loving souls gather to learn and to share their wisdom. When we’re not exploring relationships, Mali and I are enjoying our other shared passions–swimming, yoga, hiking, mountain biking, healthy eating, and our greatest passion of all: getting the most life out of life!

S.M. McEachern was born in Nova Scotia, Canada. She attended Dalhousie University in the 1990s where she earned an Honours Degree in International Development Studies. She worked in the field of International Development for several years, specializing in ocean development.

“Sunset Rising” is S.M. McEachern’s first novel. She says the idea for the story first came to her in the 1990s when she researched a Bio-Dome experiment in Arizona for an academic paper. The thought that the world might one day need a Bio-Dome to escape a global catastrophe set her imagination into overdrive. And the ethics behind such an idea formed the backdrop for Sunset Rising.

Her goal in writing the novel is to entertain the reader with an interesting plot and colourful characters.

The Last Stoic by Morgan Wade

Book Description

The Last Stoic by Morgan Wade

The Indie Book of the Day for 3rd of May, 2013!

Genre: Literary, History

The Last Stoic is a story of appetite and fear, both modern and ancient. Half of the story’s narrative occurs in the time and place of the ancient Roman Empire; the other half occurs in the present-day United States. The parallels between the two eras are so strong that the narrative continues uninterrupted as the setting shifts from historic Rome to modern America, alternating from chapter to chapter.

Marcus, a young man from a northern provincial border town, journeys deep into the heart of the empire and witnesses first-hand the excesses that can lead to ruin, both personal and political. His story offers an ancient commentary on the preoccupations of our own turbulent times. Shortly after his arrival, the empire is thrown into a panic by an unprecedented barbarian attack on the capital. Suspicion and paranoia abound. A young Roman/American runaway named Patrick, disillusioned with his own life and the state of his country, becomes convinced that Marcus is a dangerous traitor. Culminating in a public accusation made by Patrick, Marcus is wrongfully imprisoned, exiled and tortured as an enemy of the state. In prison, he confronts the many contradictions he has found in his adopted home, and in himself.

Throughout the story, in both eras, the writings of the philosopher-emperor Marcus Aurelius (The Meditations) insinuate themselves unexpectedly into Marcus’ life. In prison, he is saved by a chance meeting with Sextus Condianus, the “last Stoic” of the title, a cell-mate who is able to fully recite Aurelius’ words and impart their wisdom. Ultimately, it is this unanticipated and unbidden instruction that gives the young man the strength he requires to survive. It becomes evident that the words of the venerable Stoic emperor have as much relevance to our own era as they did to his.

Morgan Wade grew up in the farm country an hour north of Toronto.

The Last Stoic, his debut novel, was edited by Helen Humphreys (award-winning author of The Reinvention of Love and Coventry). It was long-listed for the 2012 ReLit Award for Fiction.

At 19, after reading Kerouac’s On The Road, he and a friend set out to circumnavigate the continent, travelling from Toronto to New York City and down the eastern seaboard, living and sleeping in a temperamental Pontiac Phoenix SJ. They spent two educational weeks at Mardi Gras, working the parades as carnies, selling firecrackers and cotton candy. From New Orleans they rolled into Brownsville, Texas, Acapulco, and then on to Palm Springs, where the Phoenix finally gasped its last. The pair continued by bus to L.A. and to Vancouver.

Morgan left the west coast to study literature and philosophy at McMaster and Dalhousie Universities, attaining a Master’s. Upon discovering the financial limitations of philosophy as a vocation, he trained as a software engineer and left Halifax at the height of the technology boom for stints in Boston, MA and Austin, TX.

Morgan has studied under novelist Michael Helm at The Humber School For Writers. His short story, The Solitaire, won an honourable mention in the Niagara Branch of the Canadian Authors Association Annual Short Story Competition and was published in their Ten Miles High anthology October, 2010. His short story Truth was published by The New Quarterly in their special 2011 QuArc issue. A poem entitled The Body Eclectic and a short story entitled The Family Business both appeared in the 2012 That Not Forgotten anthology published by Hidden Brook Press. Morgan now lives next to the best fresh-water sailing in the world, in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, with his wife and son, and a cat named Mabel. When he isn’t writing, he is learning the difference between a genoa and a jib.

Earth-Sim by Jade Kerrion

Book Description

The Accidental Anarchist by Bryna Kranzler

The Indie Book of the Day for 2nd of May, 2013!

Genre: Science Fiction, Fantasy

Was the super-continent of Pangaea split because of a management dispute? Is the biblical flood the earliest evidence of why “technology and water don’t mix”? If you always suspected that mass extinctions, such as the Black Death, had an otherworldly reason, you just might be right. Is there a real message hidden in the mysterious manuscripts that human sages and savants have created through the generations? Is there life out there, beyond our planet, and why has none of it shown up on Earth yet?

Earth-Sim is a unique spin on the history of Earth and the history of mankind. What if Earth and the entire universe were actually part of a simulation program? What if the most iconic and memorable events in Earth’s history were decisions (or more frequently accidents) triggered by two college students, Jem Moran and Kir Davos, who are still sorting out the finer points of working together and more importantly, still arguing over the finer points of planetary management?

Bring your sense of humor. Earth-Sim is frequently whimsical and often irreverent. Either way, you finally have someone to blame for the state the world is in.

Jade Kerrion, an award-winning author, got her start in fan fiction. She developed a loyal reader base with her fan fiction series based on the MMORPG Guild Wars. She was accused of keeping her readers up at night, distracting them from work, housework, homework, and (far worse), from actually playing Guild Wars. And then she wondered why just screw up the time management skills of gamers? Why not aspire to screw everyone else up too?

So here she is, writing books that aspire to keep you from doing anything else useful with your time.

She lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with her wonderfully supportive husband and her two young sons, Saint and Angel, (no, those aren’t their real names, but they are like saints and angels, except when they’re not.)

I am a wife, a programmer, and now an author. I have an adorable mini Schnauzer and more books than I have room for. I love reading romance because no matter what may be happening in my life, I can always count on my books to end happily ever after. The day I met my husband was the day I truly began believing in happily ever after. After hearing me complain a few too many times that I had “nothing” to read despite the hundreds of paperbacks scattered around the house, my husband began suggesting I write my own stories. When I finally took his advice I discovered that although I enjoy my day job as a software engineer, my true calling is to be an author.

My sister drilled into me an appreciation for fantasy and mythology, something I try to bring to my books. My debut novel, “Breaking the Nexus”, started as a book written for NaNoWriMo and has grown to so much more. It was the conduit that introduced me to a fantastic group of independent authors who have changed my life in unimaginable ways.

When I’m not writing, I’ve found a passion for blogging and interviewing fellow authors. I also love reading (of course!), baking, crochet, sewing sock monkeys, playing video games, and all sorts of random crafts. I have an incurable love of rubber duckies and stuffed animals, and I believe nobody should have to grow up if they don’t want.

Trucking in English by Carolyn Steele

Book Description

Trucking in English by Carolyn Steele

The Indie Book of the Day for 30th of April, 2013!

Genre: Travel, Automotive

Almost Ice Road Truckers, except for the tulip bulbs… “So here’s the plan. I’m going to train to drive a truck and go long-haul. I can get paid and maybe write a book at the same time. What do you reckon?” “Go for it Mum, how bad can it be?” This is the tale of what happens when a middle-aged mum from England decides to actually drive 18-wheelers across North America instead of just dreaming about it. From early training (when it becomes apparent that negotiating 18 wheels and 13 gears involves slightly more than just learning how to climb in) this rookie overcomes self-doubt, infuriating companions and inconsiderate weather to become a real trucker. She learns how to hit a moose correctly and how to be hijacked. She is almost arrested in Baltimore Docks and survives a terrifying winter tour of The Rockies. Nothing goes well, but that’s why there’s a book. Trucking in English began as a blog from the cab and became a popular podcast before taking book form. It is part of Carolyn’s ‘Armchair Emigration’ series.

Carolyn has been a psychologist, a paramedic, a proof reader and several other things, not all of them beginning with P. A trucker, for example. She began writing the day she decided to try and see the world…doing both just to find out if she could. When excerpts from her first travelogue were published by the Rough Guides she decided to keep on doing both. It made a change from teaching CPR to nightclub bouncers and designing wedding cakes.

Carolyn maintains that she is either multi-faceted or easily bored, depending on who is enquiring. Born and bred in London, England, Carolyn and her son Ben are now Canadian citizens and live permanently in Kitchener, Ontario.

Her Armchair Emigration series will be complete when ‘Bed and Breakfast’ is published in 2013. There will then be a satirical novel, a couple of children’s books and some serious stuff…

The Accidental Anarchist by Bryna Kranzler

Book Description

The Accidental Anarchist by Bryna Kranzler

The Indie Book of the Day for 27th of April, 2013!

Genre: History, Biography

By the time he was twenty-five years old, Jacob Marateck had been a Jewish officer in the notoriously anti-Semitic Russian army during the Russo-Japanese War, a revolutionary who sought to overthrow the Czar, and sentenced to death three times. After avoiding the firing squad for the final, unlikely time, he escaped from a Siberian forced labor camp with Warsaw’s colorful “King of Thieves.” Together, the two struggled to survive and obtain false papers to travel home while avoiding the Secret Police. Told from Marateck’s uniquely humorous perspective, The Accidental Anarchist is the remarkable, true story of an ordinary man made extraordinary by participating in the history-making events of the 1900s in Russia and Poland. Throughout all the hardships he endured, he never lost his optimism, which was key to his survival.

At Barnard College, I majored in Program in the Arts: Writing. My focus was on playwriting, and a short play I wrote during that time won the school’s award for dramatic writing. My first full-length play, “Do Hermaphrodites Reproduce Only in the Spring?” was a finalist in the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center Competition, and was scheduled for production twice: the first time, the theater owner died, and the season was shut down; the second time, the director committed suicide. For the benefit of the arts community, I thought it best to get out of playwriting.

But economic necessity drove me to get a real (read ‘paying’) job, and I spent fifteen years in marketing and public relation positions with consumer product, high-tech and health care companies. Somewhere between these jobs, I returned to school and earned my M.B.A. from Yale School of Organization and Management.

When I was finally able to return my focus to writing, I found that my interests had shifted to fiction, and more recently to narrative, or ‘creative,’ non-fiction, as in THE ACCIDENTAL ANARCHIST. I have also written two (not-ready-for-prime-time) novels, newspaper articles, and personal essays. In addition, there is a poem I have been working on for about ten years.
